I don't ususally ask. I generally only make quilts or other items for people I know well enough to know color choice, fabric preference ( I have a friend who does not like the feel of flannel). I will ask an expectant mom if she has a nursery theme, color choice, etc, but don't necessarily tell her why I want to know. I also usually only make lap size and smaller.
