I don't know if anyone else does this but I cut half triangles, and their mirrors, to put together in all the spaces at the top and bottom. I usually cut them at the beginning of each strip when cutting triangles. You have to cut that triangle off at the beginning of the strip anyway.

Beautiful quilt and that is a great idea! I set my hexagons with black but I like the half triangles much better.
