She used all those small odds and ends left over from cuts or even small blocks (ie HST's, 9P, or 4P and) and built a seemingly senseless (and mindless) block cut to a certain size. Then joining them together in random order.
You may be right...I really don't know who first call it crumb quilts. To be truthful, I had been doing this long before I had the internet. To me it is an off-shoot of string blocks.
