My experience is different. I shipped an expensive ($120) metal candleholder from the U.S. to Canada. It arrived damaged, and because the box was ok, I suspect it was dropped by customs when they examined it. International insurance claims are processed through NYC. It took almost a year to get the insurance claim payment, because the U.S. insurance claims office waits a set period of time for a response from the Canadian post office. They never responded, so the claim was finally paid.
This was an Ebay transaction, and I was the seller. I was glad to have had understanding buyers. I won't ship out of the country unless it is not breakable and of very low value in case I have to eat it.
