That can definitely happen Lynnie. We had the opposite happen with my daughters cat. She adopted him in her freshman yr of college. He was warm to her, but when anyone else was around people or animals he would hide. They moved 3 times and he was always this way. Then, they moved in with us after college and this cat is the most outgoing cat now. He loves us all, even the dogs. He acts like he owns us and has fun chasing Frankie and vice versa. Funny how some animals are.
