I've used dryer sheets for foundation piecing for years and I'm allergic to their chemicals, at least when it's ironed. My method is to wash used ones with dawn dish soap. If it'll clean oil covered birds it surely removes chemicals. Plus when they're washed you don't have to iron them flat. I hand smooth and let dry. I'll trim them to the size I want before sewing and they're so thin I never remove them.
