Kris P, I just lay a piece of plastic wrap on to the top and draw (NOT with a permanent marker!) designs that I might like to to do - audition them. It does not stick. Before settling on that one, I tried the look of cross hatch, SID and a couple of other designs. The wrap is changed for trying each design. It's a very useful idea. The wrap is
not left on the top for sewing.
It's also handy to take pictures and print them out to look at them side-by-side for a while if the decision is a tough one.
Then I make a template, draw the shapes lightly with pencil and ta da, let's sew!

I also like the more quilting option. It's still not so much quilting that I'd call it heavily quilted. Do you quilt right through the plastic wrap? Do you have trouble getting the pieces of wrap off the quilt? I've tried Glad Press and seal, an am never really thrilled with the result.
