I would be curious as to the definition of "thin". I think that would look out of balance and look too small. Personally, I'd just put a red binding on it or make the border make a statement.
When I'm trying to decide on the width of a border, I will use the block size as my guide. Personally, I wouldn't make a border narrower than the width of the blocks.
