When I taught kindergarten, we used to make butterflies using white paper coffee filters, watercolor markers and plain water. The water caused the colors to run. When dry, we scrunched up the filter in the center and used a clothespin as a body. The kids loved these and they were safe for even the little ones to make.
This is the same idea as the Sharpie and alcohol but safe for little, little kids to do.
