Also look up Amy Johnson on YouTube. She does a lot of quilting with rulers at her sit down domestic sewing machine. She's a fantastic teacher. She also has a sampler quilt that she's been working on for a while and the combination of ruler work and regular fmq that she has done on it is fantastic.

Thanks, Rob, for the links and info on Amy Johnson's YouTube. I'm really curious now, so I'm definitely going to have to investigate this. There may come a day where I cannot use my longarm (shudder, cringe) and having this knowledge would at least help keep me sane.
