I believe Tartan is talking about "Magic Pins" and they come in several different colors.
I like the Bohin pins.
What I learned from a quilt teacher at the Houston show several years ago is that oftentimes cheap, low quality pins aren't always dull per se, the sides are sort of pock-marked and rough, so they don't glide smoothly in the fabric. If you're shopping at Joann's or another big box store, look for pins that say "nickel plated".
