I have had this problem too! I try to use a Project Planner to keep track of my projects. I also use files to track patterns (including pictures, name, where is the pattern, etc.). I have files for Baby, Scrappy, etc. When I want to make a quilt, I check my files first to see which patterns I own. It's not a perfect system but it helps me.
