I use a neti pot with salt water if the sore throat is from post nasal drip. Clears out the sinus cavities and shortens a cold too. Or you can have him try a salt water nasal spray like Ocean to help loosen mucous.

For sore throat gargle with warm water and karo syrup.... also butterscotch candies help coat the throat to keep it from hurting so much.

Braggs Apple cider vinegar, honey and water.
1 T each to cup of hot water. Has worked everytime in my family for 3 generations.

All of the singers I know swear by zinc lozenges---they taste nasty but can sometimes be found with flavors, or he can suck on a piece of hard candy at the same time.

If he's anything like my DH you could have the quintessential "silver bullet" and he still wouldn't take it. It would put a damper on his bid for martyrdom.

take fresh sage and make a tea and drink as hot as tolerable. Also, my favorite cure though gives my husband food dreams, mash garlic cloves, apply to bottom of feet. Garlic is excreted through the lungs and is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic. So it kills the germs in the lungs as you breathe. oh yeah, rub the feet with olive oil before putting on the garlic...no accidental burns!
