I'm 68 years old now, but I've been quilting for at least 20 years (can't remember when I started, since I've been sewing all me life--started when I was 13-14) anyway, That means I started when I was about 48. We all get old sometimes, if we are lucky, and a couple of months ago my DH and I went on a cruise and I swam with the dolphins. It was wonderful and probably something your friend thinks is only for young people. Doing "young" things is what keeps people young.

I'm 43 - I've been quilting since I was 9. My husband and my 12 year old daughter quilt! I run classes where girls as young as 7 quilt and have LOADS of friends younger than I that quilt!!!

My daughter and I each made our first quilt as high school students. She is not currently a quilter, but I'm guessing she will jump back on the bandwagon eventually like I did.

I don't consider a person to be 'old' unless they act like it...that may be at 30 or at 100!
I tell people I'm not ever going to be 'old'.

My friend Granny Snipes is the kind of older person I would like to become. She is a bouncy, vibrant individual who started college at 68 after getting her GED (thanks to encouragement from my mom) and was perfectly at home with all the 18 year olds. They voted her Spring Fling Queen! She celebrated her 90th birthday on a flight from her sister's home in Washington or Oregon (don't remember which) to Branson, MO.

When I was 35 and newly divorced I kept myself busy (staying home nites with kidlets) by crocheting. I dated a fellow that looked at an afgan I had recently completed and he said " you must have a lot of time on your hands, only old ladies crochet!". I was blown away! I have been sewing since I was 4 yrs old, recently took up quilting (couldn't ever figure out why any sane person would cut up perfectly good fabric into little bitty pieces, just to sew it back together again!). I am now collecting Social Security, have had both hips and knees replaced and some would say I am old. I don't think so! I am a proud Red Hat member, a quilt guild member, I go to a Newcomers Club here in AL where I just moved from CA, I go to church, I go to lunch and dinner, the theater, I am active (don't hike anymore, but love to dance) and don't sit around the house much! Old, I think not! Maybe it is a state of mind, but I have been out of my mind for years now! Linda

I'm 47..made my first quilt when I was 19 using scissors and every color of gingham I could find. I had never heard of a rotary cutter or "the rules". I just wanted to make a quilt for my babe. She's 28 now.. =)

I started quilting at 38. I am now 51. My daughter is 30 and started her first quilt at 29, she's still working on it having had to take a break because of the birth of my grand daughter.

i've enjoyed reading this post! My goddaughter is 12 years old and last year she did an 18 inch square log cabin quilt (with a little assistance)...just the size for her American Girl dolls! Her mother (my sister) is a quilter...has been for a number of years. Compared to her, I'm still a newbie, but my sister refers to my as the expert on t-shirt quilts when one of her friends wants advice (I've only made 4 t-shirt quilts, but the recipients like them, so I must do all right!) Oh, and might I add...My 9 year-old grandson wants to make a quilt with me from 6-inch squares of fleece I have! I'm excited!
