    Default Denim Rag Quilt

Can I make a denim rag quilt with 2 layers of denim, rather than a layer of denim with flannel? I don't have enough flannel to use as 1 layer, but I have a TON of denim.

I have made them with cotton on the back and with flannel. 2 layers of demin would work but I wonder about the weight. If its not to big I don't see why you couldn't.

You can but it will be one HEAVY quilt! I've made one with just one layer of denim and it was fine.

    Does cotton fray?

Mine did! I used a layer of cotton for the front and then 2 layers of flannel.

If I use a layer of denim and a layer of cotton, do I need batting?

I never use batting when making a rag quilt; it just adds too much weight and bulk. The denim and cotton will be quite enough.

Yes cotton will fray as will any fabric that is woven. I have made demin rags with drapary fabric samples and a cotton back. Turned out lovely. I have also done demin rag mixed with flannel on the front, memory quilts for freinds made with jeans and flannel shirt. With those ones I did the demin with a flannel back and the shirt fabric with a peice of batting and the backing. I have done one in light weight demin with lace blocks. Demin comes in many weights and will mix and play well so long as your weights are compatable. Use a good thread and a shorter stich lenght.
Also a word about your demin, demins made with a strech fabric such as spandix don't work so well in a rag quilt project. It will fray but you will see little gray/black tubes of the man made fabric, spandix.
