You should be able to find a good used machine. I am partial to Brothers. I buy mine refurbished and they are just as good as new ones...sometimes better. Check AllBrands or Ken's Sewing Center. They usually ship free and even have ones left on lay-a-way or traded in for upgraded models.

All of the above and one more, check out Overstock.com. I always look at the machines on this site and there are some basics and ones with bells and whistles. A feature you didn't mention that I absolutely use everytime I piece is the needle down feature. Check out a good dealer, one who does the repairs on the machines they sell, and see if there is a machine, new or used, for the price you want to pay. A lot of quilters trade in machines just because they want to upgrade. The traded in machines are usually cleaned and checked out to make sure they are in good condition. My fave dealer is an hour's drive from here but worth the trip.
