Annaquilts

It looks like a lovely pattern and it sounds you are on the right track. If it looks good to you is all that matters. I also make controlled scrappies and like you might pull certain fabrics or colors out to make the rest play nice. Please post pictures. i am sure we would all love to see your progress.

Consider making your blocks without being too picky about fabric selection, then put them up on a design wall and remove the ones that make you less than happy. See if the removed ones work together in a different quilt. I often end up with a secondary project made up of the misfits from the first.

Another strategy I use sometimes is to make a "rule" about the included colors. For example-- only colors that could potentially be found in a high fructose corn syrup candy. Or only fabrics that would go with a pair of brown lace-up oxfords. Your rule will be highly idiosyncratic and specific to you, but it will provide a framework for you to make inclusion and exclusion decisions.

Scrappy quilts have really grown on me but I consider myself a "controlled" scrappy quilter... it must be the ADD in me. I'm sure you have been to the Scrappy photos thread here on the QB?

I have made a lot of scrappy quilts. A lot of them have been just been nine patches sewed together with no strips between. I just make sure each block has dark and light fabric and no two prints ever touch each other. And a light fabric always touches a dark fabric. I always add one outside border which pull the quilt together. I usually cut 2 or 2 1/2 inch squares to do this. I like smaller square but you could use what ever size square you want.

I recently participated in Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. Even with paint chips as a guide, somehow my colors did not work together. It was two separate and distinct blocks so I decided to make two separate lap quilts. The first one is red/black/grey and it came out great...looks planned and it was by BH but it is scrappy. She is indeed a master of scrappy but I did not pay enough attention to neutrals and learned a lot making this quilt. Mystery is not for me but love the quilts. Have to make them after the reveal so that I can pick my scraps more intelligently...LOL.

I think the pattern you posted is lovely. The colors all work well together and the sashing makes a huge difference. I haven't made a scrappy yet but I think I'm going to fall in the "controlled" scrappy group as Katier825 mentioned. Ha.

This is certainly one of the most informative threads on the subject of scrappy quilts. I am just soaking it all in. I really enjoy seeing the posting of scrappy quilts. I have lots of scraps-I just need to jump in and do something. I like all of the comments and see lots of encouragement in them. Thanks to all of you.

I think sometimes if a quilt/block looks like it doesn't work it changes when more pieces or a borders are added. I was making 4 patches with 2 inch squares as leaders/enders and they didn't look good, then I added more squares making them into a nine patch and I really like them now. Not sure what I am going to do with them yet.
