Default Binding how much to charge

Can anyone tell me what the going rate is to have someone bind a quilt by hand.

I use to charge by the hour. I could do five feet per hour so I would measure the quilt and charge by measurement. That way if I was interrupted, I wouldn't be overcharging my customers. I haven't been quilting for others in over 15 years so what I charged probably wouldn't work for you. Think about what you would want to pay someone and ask some of your quilting friends.

A guild member charges $45 for a queen size mitered corners. She will make the binding, sew it on the quilt and hand stitch it down. She usually leaves the meeting with at least four or more quilts to finish by the next meeting. She does it to pay for her quilting retreat and classes as she only has SS income. I guess what you want to pay is the going cost.

Different locations charge different amounts. Some charge by the inch, some by their time, some by the project. You will get lots of answers. I charge $20 an hour for sewing. Sometimes I charge $20-$40 to do a binding, if I have to prepare the binding ( piece strips, fold, press, machine to one side, hand stitch to other) I charge more than if someone brings me ready to stitch ( already pieced, folded & pressed) binding. And even less if they machine stitched it to the front & I am doing the fold over & hand stitch. Many factors determine price. Size of quilt, mitered corners, scallops, rounded with bias binding.... There is no simple answer. Check with a local shop & see if the do, or know someone you could check with to see what they charge. Or if you have a guild bring it up as a discussion at a meeting.

I charge $.25 per linear inch. I currently have 5 customer quilts waiting for binding, and my LQS has informed me that number 6 is on their frame.

The one by me is the same as what Peggi mentioned -- $1/linear foot to make + $2/linear foot to sew on by hand ($3/foot is the same as $.25/in)
