    Default Banana Peel Bacon???

I'm not kidding folks. I saw this recipe in a magazine not too long ago. I have not tried it. I'm not sure I'm going to. Has anyone else heard of this?

sounds fun actually, but we buy banana's 2 or 4 at a time because we hoth find overripe bnanas horrid. I suppose you could eat the bvananas and leave the skins to ripen some more.

    Ooo, ick

My daughter had some called Faken, made with banana peels I think. It didn't taste like bacon so don't think it will when you first try it. For what tastes it does have is okay but it's not bacon.

Well...of course it's not bacon...it's just an interesting substitute for bacon. I have not tried the recipe, but as I recall, it said to wash and scrape the inside of the skins, then marinate them overnight in a smokey, bbq type sauce, then baked on a sheet pan. I'll try to find the actual recipe and post it for you all.

Maybe I'll try making it. There are other types of bacon substitutes that I have made using various substrates such as shitaki mushrooms, eggplant, tempeh, etc. They were all delicious and a healthier alternative than fatty bacon. (Which I actually love, btw.)

I wonder why the recipe is called bacon. That gives the impression of bacon. I guess the shape of it looks like bacon. I will just eat less of the real thing. Banana peels aren't something I want to mess with unless I have to.

At about 30-40 calories per strip, I am not going to worry about eating real bacon!!

Probably for the same reason people don't eat real cheese.

OK...so...I made a small batch of Banana Peel Bacon this morning. It wasn't hard to make. I marinated them last night and fried it up in some oil this morning. Pretty simple.

It tasted surprisingly good. It had an umami element that I wasn't expecting. I think that it could have been a bit more salty, but that's just me. There was also just a hint of banana flavor. The strips turned out thin and crispy. Is it bacon...no. Would I serve it with fried eggs...no. But I would put these strips in a sandwich any day.
