    I am a handquilter as well and I mark mine before I sandwich. I just machine quilted a twin size quilt and did cross hatching and I marked that before I sandwiched.

    It depends on what kind of quilting I am doing. Hand quilting I usually mark the top first. In machine quilting sometimes I use the Golden Thread paper, sometimes Glad Press & Seal and sometimes I FMQ (no marking).
