Being a new quilter without a large 'stash', I find the pattern first, then look for fabrics.

I have it both ways. Sometimes the fabric defines the pattern, sometimes I like a pattern and then buy the fabric.

I like to pick a pattern then shop in my stash -- sometimes I have to change things up a bit as I won't have enough of one fabric as called for by the pattern. I do love to find fabric for a specific pattern -- finding the fabric is most of the fun!!

I'm new and just starting to gather fabrics. The quilt for my wife that I'm currently working on is being made all with fabrics I'm buying specifically for that. I'm buying old men's flannel shirts and other flannel fabrics for my next quilt. That one will be for me. I also buy thrift store fabrics that I like when I see them just because I like them and they're cheap even though I don't know exactly where they'll be used yet. The right project will come to me in time.

I buy the fabric and then look for a pattern. I love to have lots of choices.
I have never picked out fabrics for a pattern in the store.
