I think there are eight panels. There is an embroidered bird cage in the middle but book has variations of pattern.

Beautiful block. I also think it is fun to do applique by hand. My resolution for next year is to keep hand work projects next to my chair and lamp in the living room to do as I watch the news. This will be a beautiful quilt for sure. Keep up the great work. I have gotten bad about playing solitaire on my Kindle at such times-there is nothing to show for it when I have used this bit of time this way!
