    If you cut 4 (or a bunch) 2.5" x 5.5" strips. Stitch them in pairs. Iron. Lay one pair on top of another with colors contrasting or however you want them. Wiggle the middle seam til it sits right. Square off the ends. Stitch both ends. Lay your ruler on one of the seams you just sewed and line it up with the seam. Measure over 2 1/4" from the seam and cut. Repeat on the other end. you'll have two perfect 4 patches from each set of pairs you do.

    If you're doing a two-four color quilt. You could use the full length of the jelly roll strips. and just keep working in from the ends.

    Eleanor Burns shows it being done on her videos. On her jewel box tutorial, she shows how to take two pieces of material and get 4 HSTs and 2 4-patches from two pieces of material laid on top of each other with right sides facing.
