Beautiful quilt. What size is the lap quilt? Did you use 10" blocks for each square in the 9 patch or did you cut them down. If you used 10" squares for the block how many squares do you need across and how many down? I have about given up on the DP9 because I make my lap quilts 40 x 60 and I usually use 5" charm packs but I always have to put a 4" piece across the bottom and the top to make the size come out right.

I love a D9P in general but the colors and fabrics you have used make it even more to my liking. And you are right that a beginner can make a beautiful quilt using this technique. The quilting just adds to its beauty.

No dumb questions! And I'm still a newbie, so I vividly remember asking all the same questions. LOL
See the image (below) for the layout of the light fabric. And keep in mind that your center fabric is the only one that gets cut into four small squares, so for a less scrappy look you can make this center fabric all the same in all of your 9-patches. The outer four corner fabric squares do not get cut and should be pretty fabric that you want to showcase.

This one is a lap sized quilt 57" x 70" and I did not have to use the entire layer cake; although for the light fabric I did have to go into my stash since there was not enough of the light fabric included in the layer cake.

This lap sized quilt turned out to be 57" x 70" and I'm not sure how many 9-patch blocks I made. Maybe 15 blocks before they were cut. And I squared up all of the cut blocks before sewing back together.

Using charm packs would be the same as my using the layer cake since I still had to cut up the layer cake into 5" squares.
