I am making a quilt for baby coming in July. I have a stripe fabric that I want to use for border... should I cut it on the bias, or just cut vertical and horizontal...... also do you think it needs a small blue border first... appreciate any suggestions. Quilter 1234

I'd do a small blue border, then the stripes. I'd cut the stripes so that they went from the center to the outer edge. I'd probably use corner stones because matching stripes on mitres drives me nuts! LOL Then I'd do a blue binding.

This is a great quilt for a July baby. I would use that stripe lengthwise and miter the corners, so it looks like a continuous frame. (The top and bottom borders would show horizontal, and the side borders would show as vertical)

Or, since that is tricky, I would still cut all pieces lengthwise and use a cornerstone square (blue or even red with a blue star) in each corner.

You can also cut the borders so they run the length of the sides and run lengthwise at the top and bottom. You don't have to miter and it gives the illusion the top is set into a whole striped fabric. The main trick is to make sure the stripes match where the top and bottom borders go across the sides.

Although bias gives a fun look to stripes, I would starch the dickens out of it before cutting :wink: to keep the stretching minimal.

I forgot to add, I don't know that I'd do a blue inner border on this one. I'd probably just add the red stripe border and then bind it with one of the blues.
