So, hubby sees an ad on CL for "Free fabric, come and get it!" and emails to get more info. The lady sent him the addy and off we went this morning. This lady is cleaning out her moms house, and the mom was a severe hoarder of ... yep, fabric!! She said to pick up whatever we wanted that had already been set outside and if I wanted more to call her back. We took everything outside, totally filled the car from the trunk to the front seat. She wasn't kidding when she suggested I bring a big truck. On the way home, I did call her and we headed right back after unloading the first haul, for another haul. After sorting thru both loads for over 8 hrs., this is what I have... over 1,000 yards of decent to real quality LQS fabric. Silks, flannels, plaids, ginghams, flour sacks, 3 quilt tops, 2 sets of blocks for more tops, 1 quilt that just needs binding, metalics, tons of other cottons and cotton blends that my head is literally spinning. I don't even know where to begin with getting this all organized. LoL! There are a lot of really cute panels and pillow sets, and even fabric that you turn into stuffed dinosaurs(no idea what these are called), ducks and a turtle. Here's some pics to help sum it all up.

My starting stash, don't laugh I know it was pathetic. ;-)

    Lucky you!

I wonder that she didn't want to keep at least one of the quilt tops for herself.

Yeah, the daughter that was there wasn't very... friendly actually. She just seemed pretty bitter about the whole fabric/quilting thing. I reckon I could see where she was coming from, what with having to go thru everything and the way her mother lived in that house.

It just wasn't a very sociable hour and a half is all. I tried to make nice and do the small talk thing to pass the time but she was just not very nice. Even on the phone. Must have been a bad day for her, I don't know. I was even gonna offer her some money for all that she let me take but, she was so unfriendly that I just said "thank you so much" and left.

What a great haul!!! Good for you!

Twice I have been approached at quilting events by people asking if I would take and use their inherited stashes. Those people were charming. One was a lady so disabled she could hardly move, so sorting through her great aunt's stuff must have been an ordeal for her, so I would have understood if she had been cranky, which she was not. DH nudged me into offering her a lap quilt that I had just finished. She was very happy with it.

How excellent! Well done and Yay! So glad it went to a good home and not discarded. Better get busy looking out patterns....there's a lot of potential quilts in that lot!
