Amish Quilts
Can anyone tell me what the definition of an Amish quilt is? I'm really curious about whether this is a simple description of one made by the Amish community or if it is a reference to specific designs? Also are these all hand pieced and quilted or can they be made on a machine? I was looking at some online and really in awe of how beautiful they are. Thank you

In addition to this explanation... An Amish quilt, actually made by the Amish could be pieced on a treadle machine (Amish shun electricity) or hand pieced but would definitely be hand quilted.
An Amish Style quilt could be assembled in any way, machine or hand and finished by hand.
Some sects of Mennonite will use electricity so the quilt could be machine pieced and quilted.

The traditional Amish quilts are made from solid color fabrics and simple designs. These are what quilters generally mean when we speak of Amish quilts. Today the Amish also make quilts (for sale) from many designs using modern fabrics. The general public (non-quilters) refer to these as Amish quilts.

I go to an Amish lady to have my larger quilts hand quilted. She has made many quilts of different designs and uses a treadle machine when piecing and then all quilts are hand quilted by various ladies in the surrounding Amish community. It is always fun to see any new quilts she has for sale. She also has wall hangings, baby quilts and other small projects for sale too.

There is a place in NY that I go to when I am up there. She is Amish and runs a little store. She sells her quilts in her store. They start at about $400.00. They are a lot of black background and colorful fabric in the body of the quilt. She also had several appliqued quilts....All are beautiful.
