Today, I thought I would experiment with pre cuts (layer cake and charms) and decorative stitches to make blocks. Placed a new spool of thread and started to zip away until......fabric puckering, stitches puckering. What could be wrong! Rethreaded the machine and started to zip away with the decorative stitches only to encounter the puckers. Took the spool out and found the thread was caught in the small slice that is used as a thread leader holder. Aghhh . When the thread got caught in the small notch it was enough to throw the tension off. Took my nail file and filed that notch smooth. Since the fix, it's been zipping along without a problem.

When that happens I turn the thread over to the side without the notch.

Ive done the same thing, that silly little slot they could do away with and it wouldn't bother me one bit! I can't tell you how many times I've thought my machine was needing service due to that pesky little slit.

My machine is suddenly causing me the same problem! Could you be more specific & tell me exactly what the thread leader holder is & where it might be located?

In some spools of thread, the manufacturer cuts a small slit on the edge of the spool to secure the thread end from unraveling from the spool. I reverse the direction of any spools with the little cut so the thread coming off the spool can't catch.

I put a little dot with my permanent marker on the spool edge right where the slit is. That helps me easily find the slit.

That's not my issue - I'm using a cone of thread.

Why buy frustration? There are too many good threads not on those type of spools. I got rid of all those type spools long ago.

I use cones all the time and they all have slits on the bottom
