I have spray basted a quilt and it,s not going well can I start again by washing the spray out of top,wadding and backing? And just pin it together.

Exactly what happened? I use spray basting all the time and it is wonderful. Maybe some details would help us help you. Did you lay out the quilt and then spray on the wadding (batting in America) and lay it on the backing working in small sections? Then, when you get the wadding (backing) all basted on backing and then spray small sections of the top of the batting and lay the top of the quilt on it (I usually start from the middle and work my way to the outside of the quilt). You can reposition it on the batting if it doesn't go down perfectly. Just some suggestions.

I don't think you can wash an quilted top that hasn't been quilted or you will have a disaster on your hands. Most batting (wadding) won't wash up nicely. What is wrong??

Did you perhaps spray baste and use polyester batt? You do get some movement unless you use a cotton or cotton blend batt. If you used 505, it lets you reposition if needed. As for washing, you could probably soak an unquilted top but I would not recommend putting it in a machine.

I read that you should spray the fabric....not the wadding/batting.

My experience with spraying was that after it dried I could gently peel off the top and back from the batting and reposition them. If you want to separate them you should be able to then pin or hand baste. But I would not wash any of them at this point, certainly not the top because it could fray and get damaged.

Thank you so much for your advice. I have used 505 before but this top is all on the cross.
I think I was so frustrated when I put the post on and have since been repositioning it,yes I knew you should spray the top not the wadding.
I will leave it for now and have another go later.

I spray the back of the top and the top of the back. I never spray the batting. Then I lay the batting over my large table and smooth the back onto it starting in the center. Next, I turn it over and smooth the top on the same way, center out. Finally, I press both sides with the iron. I do pin here and there a few places around the edges. It always works great for me. I do a lot of smoothing though.
