I saw a quilt at a show that had a thin ribbon stitched in the seams between the blocks horizontally and vertically. What is the foot that feeds the ribbon and sews at the same time? I have a Brother sewing/embroidery machine.

The foot that feeds cord through is called a couching foot but I don't know if it would feed ribbon. I think there are different widths of couching feet available though.

I've seen the feet demonstrated, but never used one on a sewing machine. This can also be accomplished with speciality feet on a basic serger, like my old workhorse White Superlock 534. Sometimes the feet can be found where sergers are sold. About 25 yrs. ago, I took a serger class at a local college where the instructor taught how to couch ribbon, sequins, and beading while making a sample pillow. Stop by a store and browse the serger instruction books or check out your local library. The feet for sewing machines and sergers are not interchangeable. Hope you have fun!

In your search, look for "Braiding Foot"... some have an adjustable width thingie in the front for different widths of Ribbon/Braid.

I'm in the middle of moving. My Babylock "jewelry box" full of feet hasn't surfaced - yet. If I knew where it was, I'd dig for that foot to show you.

I'm off to see if I can find a picture of what I'm thinking of...

my pfaff calls it a decorative trim foot and it works great for flat ribbons. the couching foot is really nice for yarns and such but doesn't hold them flat.

I agree with RipStitcher, a braiding foot is what Brother calls the specialty foot for braids, ribbons, cords or tapes up to 7mm wide.

I just learned to do this last week in class. You need a Ribbon/sequin foot.

Forgot to add you can also use your regular foot and use ladder stitch to sew ribbon on fabric. You may have to play with the width depending on how wide the ribbon is.
