Default Sewing circle block together

I am making a quilt that has circle blocks. Each block is made of 12 circle segments. The first one I did, I sewed two sides, six petals each. When I joined the two sides together I had such a hard time when I came to the middle of the block. I broke two needles before I finally got the two sides sewn together. Anyone have any hints on how to do this a little easier. The points coming together in the center of the circle did not come out as nice as I wanted on my first block.

Lengthen your stitch length for starters when you get to that section. I tend to be an open-seam-presser anyhow, but definitely would press my seams open even if I weren't on that type of block. That should help considerably as well.

When assembling the 2 halves (each segment) stop a 1/4" from the center edge, backstitch to secure the seam like you would do for a set in seam (aka Y seam). When you assemble the two halves, start in the center and sew out to the edge. This should also allow you to fan out the bulk of the seams in the middle and will also make for more accurate center point.
