Default math question

I am working on a small wall hanging the directions say to join a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 strp to a 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 sqr instead of cutting the 2 I want to cut one soooo how do I figure that, in my mind I would cut a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 that way I won't have a lot of seams to match do I add or subtract something and they are both the same color (backround)..........thanks

One reason they might have you piecing those is to provide a ditch (seam) so you can later SITD.

EDIT: I misread your post originally. Yes, you could do 2.5" x 3.5".

I agree with Bree123. Since you'll lose 1/4" seam allowance on both the 1 1/2" strip and the 2 1/2" square, you end up with 1 1/4" + 2 1/4" = 3 1/2"
