Default Mom's old Singer

Hi ., I have my moms singer and would like to know its age. I know some of my school clothes were made on it. It has a medal on the front with 401A on it. I would like to get it up and running.

below the plate with the 401A on it there should be a plate with a longer serial number. If you post a picture or type it here, we can look that up for you

401 is a good, strong, machine. You will find it very capable.

Singer 401 is a good machine. I spend more time reconditioning them than any other. They aren't all that intuitive so you will need good information or a good tech.

Singer manufactured the 401 from 1956 to 1961.

I second Miriam's comment. (It's my go-to machine.) A light oiling every time you start a new project will keep it humming.

I bought my 401A new in 1958. I have been sewing on it all these years with never a problem. Still runs like a dream.

I, too bought my 401A new in 1958 and has never needed work. I keep her oiled before every project. I have made car seat covers, duvet covers, men's suits, capes, etc. It is my tank.
