Default New to quilting

Hi. My name is Christina. I have wanted to quilt for quite a few years and am finally finding the time. I am wanting to make a quilt from my daughter's baby clothes. Should I start out with a smaller project before tackling this project? Seeing as I've never quilted before what are the necessary tools I will need? any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Welcome to this world! Yes, you do need a "few" basic supplies. I suggest you visit YouTube and search beginner quilter type tutorials..for starters. Just to get an idea of how/what. Then if you have a local quilt store in your vicinity, visit there. They may have a beginners class to help you and will be happy to work with you...and, of course, we are here for help.......let us know how your adventure progresses.

Minimum that you will need; cutting mat, rotary cutter, white thread, fabric, needle and sewing machine if not hand piecing and quilting. That's the short list. I started by taking a "Quilting 101" class at a local quilt shop! If you purchase nice quality fabric, expect to pay $9-12 a yard at a LQS (local quilt shop).

Welcome from New York state!

I would also see if there is a quilt shop in your area and take their beginner's class. Making a quilt from used clothing is a bit more complex because you are not dealing with consistent fabric weights or sizes. Get your feet wet with a smaller, simpler project.

I suggest you take a class and make a couple of simple quilts first to learn on. Your daughters baby clothes likely have great sentimental value to you, so I would wait a bit until you are up on the learning curve before cutting into them.

You will need a ruler too. Use a Joanns coupon and get a mat, ruler, rotary cutter combo. Start with a simple pattern maybe a nine patch or log cabin. Do a lap quilt or smaller. Maybe just a table runner. To finish a project is better than getting frustrated with the wine it may take to do a large one. Once you have gotten familiar with the basics you will be ready to work on your baby clothes quilt. Most of all. Have fun with it. Even if it is not perfect, it has heart in the work.

Welcome to the quilting board. We can help you! If you have a Walmart, they have some nice fabric called Waverly that you may want to look at.
