Default Quiltsmart apple core directions

has anyone used the applecore fusible from Quiltsmart? I have no idea what they are talking about. make a base with squares. i assume they mean the backing. but they say the base will become part of the applecore. sigh. confused......
just happened to find this in my packed things. but have already cut out 10 inch applecores to make a quilt with. but have the fusible with smaller ones i will either use or give away.

OK, negative space was mentioned in video on u tube. ok. the squares that make a backing are set on point and really do become part of the front cores. all apple core are placed horizontally. found a post here in 2011 that helped too.

I couldn't find a video, but would it be done like this? If the green is the background fabric, and the apple cores were placed 'corners' touching and fused and appliqued, every alternate core would be the background fabric. I would make the background the size of the intended quilt.

Just a thought.
