Default Sewing along a cut edge or sewing along a drawn line

I can sew along a cut edge and - usually - the piece turns out okay.

For reasons I have not been able to figure out - yet - when I sew along a drawn line - my piece ends up skimpy.

I think part of the reason for that - when I cut pieces out individually (with a rotary cutter) - they are a smidge larger than the "designated size" -

Anyone else have this problem?

I don't think I do, but now you're making me wonder and want to test it out and see!

Although...I can't think of when I would sew along a drawn line (for piecing) unless I'm doing HST, and I make those oversize and trim down. So maybe I do have the same issue but I never notice because I do everything a little larger to start out.

When sewing along a drawn line, you should sew just to the right of the line, to compensate for the width of the thread.

when the line is drawn, is the pencil point nice and sharp? a blunt point will cause the sewing line not to be in the right place

I draw my line from corner to corner but stitch next to the line not on it. You need a little extra fabric to go over the stitching for your size to come out right.
