I am making a quilt for a little boy who is almost blind. His mommy and daddy are close friends of my SIL and DD. I am using minky as the backing. Would using warm and natural batting make it to heavy? The little boy is almost 3 and they think he may see some shapes and colors. He loves to "pet" things and we thought minky would be perfect.

I've used warm & natural batting in a quilt that had minkee backing and I don't think it is too heavy.....depending on where you live, here in the Midwest it's perfect for our cold winters.

The LQS here uses warn and natural and minkee.

I love the warm and natural, it will be nice and warm I wouldn't think it would be to heavy. :wink:

I would ask the parents how heavy a quilt that they want for him... my grands would not be able to use one that heavy. :D:D:D

This will be a surprise gift to them. They are expecting another baby by December and I will also make him/her a quilt for a Christmas gift. We don't have severe winters here, knock on wood, so warmth isn't a big issue. I made 2 quilts for their other friends who just had a second baby. DD gave the quilt to them just days before the baby made her arrival.

I found some low-loft poly batting that was left over from a quilt I made for my DGS. It is so light. The little fellow is kind of small for his age and I wasn't sure if W&N would be to heavy. I hope he will love this quilt and drag it around like my little DGS does with his.

I did baby quilts for my twins and it was a bit stiff and heavy. Maybe try Hobbs 80/20 or something. But I think that might need more quilting. I found quilting with Minky as backing something I did not want to do a repeat of. Hopefully some one has some good ideas but I just wanted to let you know I was not all together happy with the warm and natural as batting with Minky as batting. I do think the Minky would be wonderful for this little boy.

I have used minky on alot of quilts. I would use warm and natural for a three year old, however, on some of my minky backed quilts I used flannelette as batting. It is much lighter weight and I find it good for babies but doesn't give a nice puffy look to your quilt. It's a tradeoff.

Minky is perfect for softness though and my grands love it!!

I make all of these quilts, and my favorite blankee is two layers of minkee I quilted. Hehehe
