I'm needing some help on this pattern - specifically with cutting the triangles. The pattern instructs you to use a 12.5" square ruler and having the point up as you face it - place tape at 11.5" down from the point and at 16.5" down. I did this - but when I starrted cutting a few minutes ago - my triangles are not the size they are supposed to be (almost half inch off)...so obviously I've done something wrong  The good news is that I can salvage the project be making it the smaller size. Is there an easier way to do this???

Well.. as an old school quilter.. I'd figure this out on paper first Mary.. then use the paper bits as templates on the fabric.. erasers work great on paper <grin> not so good on fabric.

Thanks, ladies for the quick replies. The triangles I was trying to cut were to be 16.5" across the bottom and 11.5" along the sides. Appreciate the tip about trying on paper first - which never occurred to me :) I'm just grateful the project isn't doomed completely!

I can't help you with your problem, sorry. But I love the piece in your avatar! What is the name of the pattern, please? It is sooooo cute!

your saying they are almost 1/2" off-could that be seam allowance (1/4 + 1/4?)

Could anyone tell me what size the strips of fabric are supposed to be? I don't have a pattern but saw the video on how to cut and assemble the Strata Star table topper.

found this video on youtube about putting one together - don't know if it would help.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNE3As-yctA

As far a the triangle size - an equilateral triangle - where the two short sides are of equal length are subject to a basic math formula - the measurement of one of the short sides multiplied by 1.414 is the length of the long side. Conversely, the long side of an equilateral triangle divided by 1.414 is the length of the short side. If you divide the base of your triangle - 16.5 by 1.414 you get 11.66 inches, which rounds up to 11 and 5/8 in quilters terms ....or the short side of 11.5 multiplied by 1.414 is 16.25 or 16 and 1/4 inches - It sounds like either the designer is pre-trimming your dog ears/rabbit ears for you or the instructions are wrong. working it out on paper should tell you which it is.
