Sorry Weedwoman, but the Singer serial numbers have nothing to do with the Free Sewing Machine. Two separate companies.

I have not found a dating site for the Free Sewing Machine Company either. But, this site you found does have a manual you can download, if you don't have the instruction manual. The manual is very useful to have when you start using this machine. Did the machine still have attachments in the cabinet?

Paulah, what is the serial number on your machine? It should be on the top behind or in front of the arm where it comes up from the base of the machine on a brass plate? That will tell us what Singer you have so we can direct you to a manual for threading and using the machine.

Look at the Adler! I'd love to have this machine, but won't pay that price!

Nice, but the price is way high. Seems with the spring cleaning that folks are posting items on the high side; it will be interesting to see how long some of these machines sit and go through the rotation on the lists.

I bought a treadle last night. The plate says "Domestic" S.M. Co
Pat. May 19 1863
Nov. 15 1864
Jan. 31 1871
NEW YORK
Under that is:
41675

It has a requtangluar bed. Any guesses? Coffin lid has a chunk of wood missing but the drawers are there. So of the pearl inlay is missing.

Thank you Ms Johnny for the info to use the Singer 12. But, the bobbin in this machine doesn't have the little holes to thread. Still trying to figure it out.

Here are some pictures, I put a piece of tape on the little lever at the bobbin winder to show that it flips from right to left to lock the bobbin winder. On the hand wheel it has a button that you move to lock the wheel or loosen it to wind the bobbin. (something new to me). We can not find any numbers or dates any where on the machine or the irons. It has a wooden pitman rod and no skirt guard. If any of you have any ideas let us know.
