Yes, it is really that long and 4.5 inches wide at its widest. I haven't done the table runner, so I don't know what ruler is used with it.

Yes, the tree skirts are terribly expensive and sometimes not very pretty. You are going to have fun with this with six trees! My sister-in-law made one for me about 20 years ago. I finally made myself a new one last year, but I've probably given away 12-15 for gifts over the years.

I have done several of these. The way I did mine was to have two done from the same strip-pieced panels--one with fabrics going one way and the other going the other. A lot of work but well worth the effort.
