These are really just 10-minute blocks (see http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-81908-1.htm) but starting with what I'll call a 1/4 snowball.

For one flower, you need

2 -- 5" squares of fabric 1
2 -- 5" squares of fabric 2
1 -- 4" square for center
4 -- 2.5" squares of background

Sew each background square onto one corner of your four 5" squares. Trim seam to 1/4" and press toward the background color (picture 2). This makes a 1/4 snowball block

Arrange the 4 "petals" as shown in picture 3 below.

Proceed with the instructions from the tutorial above. There are just 2 differences:

1) my middle square is smaller than my 4 petals
2) you have to be careful about the orientation of the 4 petals, to keep them in the pinwheel.

The blocks should square up to 9.5 inches (9 inches finished)

Thank you so much. It's always fun when someone thinks up a new way to do a technique. I bookmarked and printed out.

Looking for flower to hand applique pattern. Nothing too tedious with the skinny stems. Anybody have one to share.
Thanks,
Jean

Blinkokr 06-15-2011 08:23 AM

Thank you for that idea, I am going to make them smaller and do a small mini quilt top with them. Which I can see as a flower garden with the batiks. Again thank you really cute
Have a Blessed day
Ellen

The tut was great, but---do you applique the center sq on or top stitch or what? Guess I'm a little slow on this one.

OK--I'm the dummy here, looked at the other tut and saw how the center was done. PLEASE no lashes with the wet noodle. DS is undergoing emer surgery as I type and DH is headed back to hosp. I grew ulcers, per dr 2/day, so my thinking cap is not fitting well.

droy57 06-15-2011 01:26 PM

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm going to try this.

Pattigail 06-15-2011 02:22 PM

I don't understand how the center block goes in. Do you sew the four other blocks together and then add the center block?

Pattigail 06-15-2011 02:29 PM

Never mind I found the other tute and now understand. Sorry for being so dumb!! :-)

gramquilter2 06-15-2011 04:30 PM

OHSue 06-15-2011 06:42 PM

Thanks so much for this one, I thought I might figure it out from your picture and having seen the original, but thanks for saving my brain power..... Lord knows I have little enough as it is.

mshawii 06-15-2011 06:47 PM

I would never in a million years have come up with this one! Thanks
    Jan

phylklos 06-15-2011 07:07 PM

quite an improvement on the regular 10-min. block! Will try it in the motning.

snipforfun 06-15-2011 08:07 PM

Definitely on my someday list!

sewbeeit42 06-15-2011 09:12 PM

I was thinking that the centers might be interesting if done like a 3-D bow-tie block so that the flower centers are 3-D. I might play with this idea.
