As requested, here is one of the patterns I use for tree skirts. You can use as many or few fabrics as you want; you will just need to adjust the size you cut your strips.

First of all, you will need the correct ruler. I use Marilyn Doheny's 9 degree circle wedge ruler. In order to get a circle, you will need 40 wedges. I've also seen a 10 degree ruler at my LQS. If you use that ruler, you would need 36 wedges for your circle.

You will need a total of about two yards of assorted fabrics for the top, 2 yards of fabric for the back, 2/3 yard of fabric for the binding, and a 54 square of any kind of batting. Please note that all seams are 1/4. This makes a 50 tree skirt.

For this skirt, I'm using seven fabrics. To the left of the fabric is the size of each. Each of these is cut by the width of the fabric, then they are sewn together lengthwise. When you are done, you will have one panel that should measure approximately 20-22 inches by 42 inches. You will need three panels for the tree skirt top. Remember to adjust the size of each if you increase or decrease the number of fabrics. Also be aware that each of panels will be cut in both directions, so you'll want to consider placement of each fabric in both directions before you cut your strips.

Sew strips together, and press all seams in the same direction. Once you have your strips sewn together and pressed, begin cutting out your wedges, alternating the ruler so you are cutting in both directions. You should be able to cut 13 to 14 wedges from each panel.

Here is the result of the alternating wedges.

Quilt as desired; I stitch in the ditch vertically between the wedges. Then bind as usual. Here is the finished tree skirt.

Thanks. How big is the hole in the center?

sammygirlqt 09-03-2011 03:01 PM

I have seen this ruler but couldn't visualize what you would make with it. Your Christmas Tree Skirt is great. Thanks for sharing.

emmy 09-03-2011 04:04 PM

That is amazing the design it makes. Thank you for the tutorial.

angiecub 09-03-2011 05:06 PM

Forgot to mention that with the ruler, there are also several patterns you may want to use.

Great skirt and thanks for showing how it is used. I am a visual learner. I bought some rulers a while back and have not a clue how to use them, so thanks again.

Depending on how long you cut your wedges, it will be approximatly 6-8 inches wide. This one is about 8 inches wide.

I really like this, and you did a great job on the tutorial and pictures! Thanks so much. I hope to get the time to make this before Christmas.

What a great tute and such a pretty tree skirt! I have loads of Christmas fabric so will make one of these. I have a 30" ruler so could make one with 12 wedges.

theresa.redington 09-04-2011 04:57 AM

Thanks for sharing. I sure could have used this about a year ago when I was making DS &DDiL their tree skirt. I don't know how many times I had to rip out all the wedges because the middle puckered. Now I know having the simple tools would have made it sooooooooooo much easier. I'm bookmarking this. Thanks again. :)

That is really nice never saw a ruler that long is it really 22 inches long? Is this the same ruler they use for the saucy spiral table runner?

orangeroom 09-04-2011 05:08 AM

Oh, I didn't realize there was such a ruler! I've been looking for nice tree skirts every year...Usually attempt to purchase after Christmas as they're so expensive. We have 6 trees in our home (all artificial due to allergies), and instead of waiting all I have to do now is purchase the ruler! Thank you for your tut!

pkelly1947 09-04-2011 05:15 AM

Thanks for the tute. I've been looking for a tree skirt pattern. I'm going to look through my stash & get started.

Great, please post pics when you get one done. I've never seen a 30-inch ruler.

Yes, it is really that long and 4.5 inches wide at its widest. I haven't done the table runner, so I don't know what ruler is used with it.

Yes, the tree skirts are terribly expensive and sometimes not very pretty. You are going to have fun with this with six trees! My sister-in-law made one for me about 20 years ago. I finally made myself a new one last year, but I've probably given away 12-15 for gifts over the years.

Latrinka 09-04-2011 06:55 AM

Awe, it's sew cute! Just love christmas stuff! Thanks for the great tute!

Murphy1 09-04-2011 07:08 AM

Marilyn1 09-04-2011 07:53 AM

Love it. Going to make some as I have tons of Christmas fabric.

baptistcook 09-04-2011 08:06 AM

I'm wanting to begin to quilt and I like the Tree Skirt. I have a stupid question.....what is quilt in the ditch?

franie 09-04-2011 08:20 AM

I have done several of these. The way I did mine was to have two done from the same strip-pieced panels--one with fabrics going one way and the other going the other. A lot of work but well worth the effort.

babalu 09-04-2011 08:59 AM
