I wanted to make the Jelly Roll 1600 but I wanted to make it full size and had 83 x 2-1/2 in strips that all had to be marked and sewn on the diagonal. This overpowered me and I thought there has to be an easier way to do this, so this is what I came up with. I have done half my strips and can't believe how fast it has gone so hopefully this comes in handy to someone else as well. Happy Quilting
I have marked out the meaurements on paper so you can hopefully see it clearly. I prefer to use the following way of using my cutting mat and ruler. Note that you will be putting the first strip just past the third full line showing. Take the first strip just past the line so that you loose the salvage when finished. Lay the second strip on top, going just past the second strip, lining it up with the top of the ruler. Pin either side of what would have been the line you mark on. I don't recommend marking on your machine like I did, but I do alot of this type of thing so I made mine permanent. I would usually have used painters tape to mark straight down from your needle. Put your strips with one end starting at the needle and line the other end up with the line. Sew across to the end. This is where I just chain sewed all my strips at one time. Cut about 1/4 in away from line and cut dog ears off. Your finished diagonal strip. |

Good thinking! I wish I could just eyeball those diagonal lines -- I HATE marking them. I love your solution. I'm thinking I could put a strip of masking tape down on my machine and cabinet and draw a line on the tape. Then it would not be permanent!

I suggest using painters tape because if left on too long, masking tape leaves an awful mess to get off.

Thanks, so much!
