I wanted to make the Jelly Roll 1600 but I wanted to make it full size and had 83 x 2-1/2 in strips that all had to be marked and sewn on the diagonal. This overpowered me and I thought there has to be an easier way to do this, so this is what I came up with. I have done half my strips and can't believe how fast it has gone so hopefully this comes in handy to someone else as well. Happy Quilting

I have marked out the meaurements on paper so you can hopefully see it clearly. I prefer to use the following way of using my cutting mat and ruler.

Note that you will be putting the first strip just past the third full line showing.

Take the first strip just past the line so that you loose the salvage when finished.

Lay the second strip on top, going just past the second strip, lining it up with the top of the ruler.

Pin either side of what would have been the line you mark on.

I don't recommend marking on your machine like I did, but I do alot of this type of thing so I made mine permanent. I would usually have used painters tape to mark straight down from your needle.

Put your strips with one end starting at the needle and line the other end up with the line.

Sew across to the end.

This is where I just chain sewed all my strips at one time.

Cut about 1/4 in away from line and cut dog ears off.

Your finished diagonal strip.

Good thinking! I wish I could just eyeball those diagonal lines -- I HATE marking them. I love your solution. I'm thinking I could put a strip of masking tape down on my machine and cabinet and draw a line on the tape. Then it would not be permanent!

nstitchs 10-06-2011 05:29 PM

I suggest using painters tape because if left on too long, masking tape leaves an awful mess to get off.

If you want to remove the marker you might want to try a mr. clean sponge to get the marker off....I used it to get it off a kitchen counter top worked well. It didn't scratch the counter top, but not sure what it will do to the plastic...

I bought a binding ruler that is 2 1/2' wide (or you can get one I think 2 1/4 and 3) and it has the angel on one end of it already. I bought mine at Joanns with a 50% of coupon. I paid $6.00 for it. I love it..so easy to also make jelly rolls with now.

Homemother 10-07-2011 05:40 AM

Thank you! This is a very helpful method and I'll use it for my next binding!

Geri B 10-07-2011 05:48 AM

I line up the strips as you have shown, but instead of pinning I just fold where the stitching line should be and finger press...then sew.....

Caswews 10-07-2011 06:21 AM

awesome !! thanks for sharing for sure!!

BettyGee 10-07-2011 06:21 AM

Thank you for sharing a super idea!

Great idea. Almost all of my borders are mitered at the corners. This will make the process much more accurate and quicker.

nancy59 10-07-2011 07:17 AM

Thanks, this is great!

RuthEm 10-07-2011 07:50 AM

Thanks for the binding tute....so clever.

quiltmau 10-07-2011 07:52 AM

to take off the sticky(from price tag to tape) use a non staining oil-I use eucalyptus oil I got in Australia but baby oil will work. It is great for getting the sticky out
To quote an old commercial-A little dab will do ya!-I use a q-tip.

lizzyq 10-07-2011 07:57 AM

vondae 10-07-2011 10:46 AM

Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial. I'm going to bookmark this so I will have it handy to refer to whan I get ready to do my strip quilt.

Nanaquilts44 10-07-2011 01:57 PM

Thank you!

mucky 10-07-2011 02:23 PM

Do mine that way all the time.

indymta 10-07-2011 03:06 PM

Thanks for the tutorial. What looked to be so simple always had me re-sewing because I didn't get the diagonal right. Now I have good steps to follow rather than eye-balling it.

luckylindy333 10-07-2011 03:44 PM

Thanks for the great tips!

OHSue 10-07-2011 06:50 PM

Thanks so much, this simplified that. I am always setting them up wrong.
