This is a tutorial on how to make 8 half square triangles (HST) at a time. Whats nice with this method vs the 4 at a time is that on this, the bias is where its supposed to be and your final edges are on the straight of grain (since that has messed me up with the 4 at a time method where you sew on the straight of grain and end up with bias edges).
Math: I started with 5 squares and my HSTs were each slightly over 2 (They will ultimately finish at 1.5 in the quilt). You will lose about 1 with this method. So if you want HSTs to ultimately be 4 finished in the quilt, they would be 4.5 unfinished. You would want to start with 4.5 x 2 + 1 = 10 square. If you want 6.5 finished, 7 unfinished, you would start with 7 x 2 + 1 = 15 square. Let me know if you have questions Put 2 squares right side together. Draw 2 diagonal lines on one Sew 1/4 on either side of each line (4 seams) Using the center as a guide, cut a horizontal and vertical line These look familiar! Cut along your pencil lines Tada! Half square triangle A tad over 2. Trim to size |
Thanks! That's a great way to do them

Thank you!!!

Thanks for this. Should save me lots of time as I tend to do them one at a time. The maths makes it very adaptable so thanks again.

thank you so much for this. Very clear and I will definitely try this method. As a newbie I really appreciate the math.

Wow, that makes them so easy. I like making them, but to be able to make them faster ---- and I'm about to start a quilt using all HST's! Great timing.

My husband is sitting here wondering why I am wahooing about triangles made into squares....sigh....if he only knew! Thanks for the info, I will definitely give it a try!

What a time saver
|
Looks handy dandy! I will have to give it a try. Thanks!
|
I like this one, thank you.
|
Thanks! Great tute! Esp the math part. :)
|
I've used this method and have a chart for sizes from 1/2 inch finished triangle to 6 inch triangles. How ever I like the idea of a formula so am going to write it on the bottm of my measurment sheet.
|
Great tutorial with very clear pictures for each step! Many thanks for sharing :-) :-)

Thanks! That's a great way to use scraps, too!
|
Very Smart, thank you
|
I love this method!

Great instructions. I tried something like this on my own with a nine patch, but it didn't quite work. Thanks for your work here.
