Here are the directions for Give Kids the World Pillowcases. I've had several requests for this.
One yard of flannel will make 4 pillows. Novelty prints in cotton/flannel is used for the pocket. I yd. will make 12 pockets.
1. Cut the plain pillow fabric into 36 inch lengths. The pockets are cut into 12 inch lengths.
2.On the pillow fabric make a hem on BOTH raw edges. (do not sew selvages). Turn down fabric about 1/4 to 1/2": taking up about an inch to 1 1/2" Accuracy is not critical. On the pocket material, hem on raw end only.
3. Match the hemmed edge of pocket & pillow. Sew the pocket material strip to the pillow fabric, right sides together along the length that is not hemmed.
4. Take the fabric back to the cutting board and fold the pocket material toward the center(wrong side of pocket material to right side of pillow material). Lay a ruler at the pocket where it is sewn and measure 15 inches.
5. Fold the pillow fabric over the ruler with the fabric right side together. Then fold the other end on top of the end you just folded(where the pocket is sewn).
6. Now cut the flannel lengthwise into 4 pieces approx. 10 1/2 to 11" wide. Flannel comes in different widths, so just divide the flannel into fourths and don't worry about the selvages, they will be sewn or serged over.
7. Make sure the pocket in the font and opening in the back are opposite. The overlap on the back needs to be at least 2 inches.
8. Use your serger or a straight and then zigzag stitch to finish the seam. Clip corner and turn the pillow to right side.
9. The FINISHED size of the pillow/pocket will be (depending on your he widths, as well as the width of the flannel...as follows: Pillow 9 3/4 " to 10" wide X 15" long. Pocket is 9 3/4" to 10" wide X 11 1/2 inches long.
These are the directions I was sent from the organization. I think they are fairly confusing. I usually cut the flannel and pillow separately and then sew them one pillow at a time...just my way to handle it. After you make a few of these, you'll find the easiest way for you.
Here are pics I have of 2 different cases in the construction phase. I hope this helps
When you have completed these...go to the Give Kids the World website to find the address for sending the cases.

Well, I got confused reading the directions but the pillowcases make sense!! I'm sure once I've done a couple, it will be much simpler. I'm going to try a couple before I commit. Right now, I'm making new pillowcases for 2 of my DGC!

sc-sunshine 08-24-2011 04:14 AM

can't get in my head, got to study this

mimistutz 08-24-2011 04:28 AM

I think I have to read this a little slower and maybe try as I go - not sure I understand.
But, I think this is exactly what I have been trying to formulate in my head. Actually I wanted to make something like this for my dog. We bought a dog bed that looks like this (different material) and Milo loves it. He actually climbs inside, we call it his sleeping bag. As I looked at yours, I think it could also be a nice bed for my DGD dolls. Hope I can figure it out.

theresa.redington 08-24-2011 04:41 AM

I think I have a box of fannel someplace in my closet (girl prints). If I find it, I'll give one a shot and let you knowhow it went because I would love to do this and maybe get a friend of mine to help. (We talked about doing something like this, but haven't as of yet.) Good place to start!

So cotton can be used too?

quiltymom 08-24-2011 04:48 AM

I also need to get it together before I commit! I'll be in touch when I figure it out!!!

Sandi19 08-24-2011 05:56 AM

Yes, cotton is fine for the novelty print. They want flannel for the pillowcase part...softer, I guess.
I really had a hard time with the directions until I started making it step by step and then it made sense. Whoever wrote the original directions...must not be someone that actually sews!

quiltymom 08-24-2011 06:07 AM

Please if you have an easier way please pm me!!!I sew alot but directions not very clear. Thanks!!!

Sandi19 08-24-2011 06:11 AM

I do it an easier way, at least for me. I cut the pillow flannel pieces first(just cut the yd. of flannel in 4 equal pieces). I cut out the 12 pillows from novelty fabric...sometimes I just have scraps of novelty and cut one pocket at a time. Then I sew one pillow/pocket at a time...look at the pictures I posted.
I just copied their directions as given to me because a couple of girls wanted them asap and I'm so busy making a log cabin quilt for a wedding so I didn't have time to rewrite the directions. I hope the pics can help you out.

marybrace 08-24-2011 06:27 AM

I can't visualize these - what size are the finished cases?

Sandi19 08-24-2011 06:37 AM

The finished size is 9 3/4 to 10" wide X 15" long for the pillowcase. The pocket can vary from 9 3/4 wide to 10"wide and about 11 1/2 long....sometimes I make the pocket a little smaller if I'm short on the novelty fabric. I use cotton or flannel for the novelty fabric. That's fine with the GKTHW organization. I try to use up scraps when I do the pocket.

These kinds of "pocket pillowcases" are used here in Norway. I was confused when I first moved here when I saw them. We all got quite a laugh when my Norwegian girl friends saw my "open-ended pillowcases."

The pocket does keep the pillow inside the case, but I prefer the open-ended kind because I love to embroider or applique the hems.

Sandi19 08-24-2011 06:54 AM

Here is the address to send the pillowcases if you are inclined to donate.
Give Kids the World Village
210 South Bass Road
Kissimmee, FL 34746
I just talked to a lady in the office there and they always need these cases. Each child and their siblings are allowed to pick a pillowcase. The org. supplies the little hospital sized pillow to go with the cases. My friend volunteers there and said the children, and their parents, are so appreciative and touched that strangers would make something for the child. A small gift like this really touches a special child. Thanks to any of you that choose to make some cases.

quiltymom 08-24-2011 07:02 AM

Thanks for address been looking but found nothing on cases. Count me in I'm going to start later today!!!!!

Latrinka 08-24-2011 01:15 PM

ksea 08-24-2011 03:23 PM

quiltymom 08-24-2011 03:33 PM

pjnesler 08-24-2011 06:59 PM

I think I'll be able to understand this in the morning - brain went to sleep a while ago, but the spirit is still going strong! :?

quiltymom 08-25-2011 06:43 AM

Duh!!!!! I got it it couldn't be any easier!!!!!! Plan on many a bunch today than send out next week!! FUN TO DO GREAT CAUSE!!!!!

btiny36 08-25-2011 07:59 AM

Try this youtube video...it's making a smaller pillow cover but the basic intructions are there and she tells you how to figure out for any size pillow...they call these envelope pillowcases...Holy she makes it soooo easy....

Sandi19 08-25-2011 08:08 AM

That is a different type of pillow. This one has the pocket and is slightly different. I'm used to making those pillows, but this one has the large pocket....similar, but you have to factor in the pocket. I do think the video would help people understand the directions....just make sure that pocket is on there. The pocket is the area where the organization puts a stuffed animal or gift.
Thanks for listing the video. I'm a visual learner and I'm sure many others will understand this by watching the video.

marybrace 08-25-2011 08:12 AM

Read the web page and found this is a nofor profit,b but is the cost of fabric tax deductible?

Sandi19 08-25-2011 08:17 AM

I dont' have a clue. I never deduct fabric when I donate. If you find out info on this, I'm sure lots of people would be interested.

quiltymom 08-25-2011 08:46 AM

I NEVER DEDUCT EITHER, MY SON ASKED ME IF IT IS A DONATION WHY DECUCT FOR IT!!! SO I NEVER HAVE

pls1946 08-25-2011 10:23 AM

quiltymom 08-25-2011 12:17 PM

They don't have to be perfect. Maybe you're being too hard on yourself.

quiltymom 09-17-2011 05:00 AM
