I have a small Q-Snap PVC floor frame for quilting, but I have used this with a hoop only before I got the Q. I don't lap quilt, but this wouldn't work with lap quilting.. Sorry :) You just need 12 clips or clothes pins and something (table?) to lay it all on.
I fold the top in half then half again. I put a small clip or clothespin at the mid-point on all four sides. Do the same with the batting and then with the back. Then I unfold the backing on the kitchen table and try to center it, but don't get too obsessed about it. Then put the batting on it and then the top. At this point, the clips should be pretty close. Line them up and then clip all three layers together in the center with one clip. You can also clip the corners, but with my round table, I really couldn't do that. You could put several clips around the edge and it wouldn’t hurt it. Then I put the center of the sandwich on my floor rack. I make sure everything is smooth and taut before I make a stitch. I like to do the center in the floor frame, then work on the rest with the hoop. I usually have 2 projects going that way! And that’s pretty much it. I do work from the center out, and make sure there are no puckers in the hoop when I move it around the quilt. I’ve never had a problem with it when I do it this way. It took me about 10-minutes from ironing board to quilt rack yesterday for a full-sized quilt. |
Sounds like this really works for you! Now if I had a frame!

Thanks for sharing this. Later this week, I plan to tack (tie-off) a red, white, and blue quilt for my brother, and I'll try this.

I watched the boards method on you tube and plan to give it a try when I sandwich my next quilt. It looked fairly simple.

You are smart to have worked this out! I love the info on this board.
|
Great idea! I love Q-Snaps for cross stitch, and this sounds for basting.
|
I assume from reading your post that you are you quilting your quilt by hand.
|
Everyone in my quilt guild who has tried using the "boards" loves them. You can probably find it on YouTube. Look for Sharon Schamber videos. She has several but doesn't leave all of them on. She has a web site but it is really expensive to join. If anyone has trouble and is really interested you can PM me. I have a video I would share.

I am having a little trouble with this. Are you quilting by hand? Do you have this quilt in a frame and using it on your machine? I am sorry, but it is not that clear to me.
|
could you put up picture of what you do Thanks
|
I will try to take pics... I don't have anything that needs to go up right now.. might have to demonstrate with a regular sheet :)
Yes, I'm a hand-quilter, not machine quilter. I'm pretty lazy, I want to skip all the "steps" and just quilt.. so the quilt police are probably going nuts right now! |

I've watched the tut, and wondered how well it works for LARGE quilts - like queen & king - need lots of space, has anyone tried it for large quilts? how did it go???? Thanks |

Oh, BTW the pic of the frame looks like it would be simple to make from pvc etc...wonder how much materials would cost? ummmmm...might give it a go.

i posted a picture of the frame.. |
Size of quilt doesn't matter--the board needs to extend beyond the width of quilt for at least an inch. I have two sets of boards. Bed boards work fine. I covered mine with fabric. For a large quilt it would be easier if you had a friend help-one on each end. Also, a chair with casters is good. My suggestion is to try it with a wall or lab size quilt first.

There is a member on this board who has a tute doing the board method. I saved it before the new board, but don't know how to access my saved stuff or I would tell you who it was! She did a wonderful job. Hope anyone interested may be able to find it. I'm sure someone knows who it was.

that is basically the same method i have used for many years. learned it from book by marsten & cunningham. used taping to hardwood floor...drifted up to taping backing to table for smaller quilts and on to using an antique quilt frame that is c-clamped at corners and rested on back of chairs for full size quilts. roll sides towards cnter for short arms [like mine :)] then work out ...cross hatch every 4 inches or so...i use cream or white thread...used a colored thread [spool almost empty so i used it up] one time and when i pulled basting stitches out i saw little areas of color in some places...just an fyi for those of you who try this. but like ashley...this is the only way i do any set up for quilting be it hand or machine ...full, wall or miniature...no backside puckers or tucks...always works great.
