how to put quilted ball ornaments together

This is for calla. She ask for help on making these. I pray that this helps.
Pick three colors. cut these into 2.5 inch squares [ATTACH=CONFIG]112706[/ATTACH] press each square in half [ATTACH=CONFIG]112707[/ATTACH] Then in half again to find center [ATTACH=CONFIG]112708[/ATTACH] open up square and place pin in the middle and close again only in half once [ATTACH=CONFIG]112709[/ATTACH] Take 2 squares wrong sides together. (this is your middle color. Center on the ball and pin at the four corners. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112710[/ATTACH] using same color. press square in half and instructed previously. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112711[/ATTACH] open and place pin in the middle. close square [ATTACH=CONFIG]112712[/ATTACH] Pin this to the middle of you square on the ball [ATTACH=CONFIG]112713[/ATTACH] fold top corner down to bottom and pin [ATTACH=CONFIG]112714[/ATTACH] fold other corner down to bottom and pin. Now pin the other side corners down. You will have 4 pins across the bottom. Do this three more times rotating ball 90 degs. each time. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112717[/ATTACH] you will end up with 4 triangles on this piece. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112720[/ATTACH] Now place two more squares on the opposite side of the ball. Be sure to measure to keep the distance even or your design will be uneven. Pin this down at the four corners as well. You repeat for this side what you have just finished for the other side. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112721[/ATTACH] Using measuring tape measure from the point down 3/4 inch. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112722[/ATTACH] insert second color [ATTACH=CONFIG]112724[/ATTACH] proceed as you did for the first color. You are only adding 4 squares at a time. You will be adding to the middle of the previous square. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112725[/ATTACH] This is how it looks after adding second color. No flip ball over and repeat this step for the other side. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112727[/ATTACH] Now measure 3/4 in. from the point between the these triangles and pin the same color. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112728[/ATTACH] This is what it looks like. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112729[/ATTACH] Flip ball over and repeat for other side. Second layer done. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112730[/ATTACH] Now for the third and final layer. Remember to work form the inside triangles out. repeat in same manner as previous row. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112731[/ATTACH] Now for the embellishments [ATTACH=CONFIG]112734[/ATTACH] I use a hot glue gun to hold down the rick rack. You can use rick rack or ribbon here. That is your choice. I just put pins in to hold the lace. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112740[/ATTACH] All finished. Just let your imagination flow and have fun with these. The direction originally said to measure 1/2 in from center for the placement of the triangles. I did not like this because the middle color did not show well. I also did not have to add an extra row if I measure 3/4 in. Do not be surprised if you use a lot of pins. I think there are about 250 pins in one ball more or less. [ATTACH=CONFIG]112741[/ATTACH] |
Great tute. I make them the same way, but I use a little square measuring tool. Instead of lace I use braid and ribbon bits. Yours are very pretty!! Thanks for all of the great pictures.

Nice job on the tute.
I made a gauge to measure from the top point to the next row or point. Made it easier than measuring it each time with a tape. You can use either a piece of template plastic or cut up an OLEO lid and use that. Cut it into a half moon shape and clip out the niche for the next row. You can also make them with the egg shaped styrofoam balls. That one starts from the bottom (small end) and you work your way up to the top. Kinda looks like a pinecone. No lace all the way around just a roset sized piece on the top to hide the last row and a hanging ribbon pinned and hot glued to that. Hope that helps. Faith :lol: :XD: |

These are so pretty. they remind me of the ones my Aunt made years ago.she called me one day and asked me to come to her house she was moving into a assisted living place and she had these ornaments in a big box and with a big surprise she told me she wanted me to have them.I was shocked I took them and every year they go on my tree My aunt is still living and she is 99 years old.There are 50 of them all a little different.I enjoyed your tutorial to see how she made them

Thanks for the tut. I have tried several times to make these but they never turned out right. Your pics will make it SOOOOO much easier. I have a dozen 3 1/2 balls left over from another project. Now I know what I will make for our ASG Christmas party.

I also make these and use a smaller pin to lessen the weight of the ornament. When I was taught this at a class, they told us to do 5 rows on each side (overkill). Once I started doing this on my own, I make mine with 4 rows on each side. I also use one less pin for each square one I'm past the 1st row (one end will always over lap another and that is where I short it a pin...I think this also lessens the weight). I sell these at a local craft fair in the fall.
