HST Tutorial from a square

OK, so you may already know this one, but this is the first time I have seen this way of making HST. She uses a large square and makes 8 HST. I have only ever seen how to make 4 with a large square!!
She gives you all the measurements you need to do it, too. Just thought some of my fellow quilting board quilters would like this!

Somebody watched Fons and Porter this week!

I still prefer the wonder cut ruler for making them.

sassey 02-23-2012 03:13 PM

Thamk you for the tut I had never seen this before

mltquilt 02-23-2012 03:15 PM

This is similar to the Eleanor Burns way of making HSTs. At a quilt show last week one of the vendors had papers that you can use to to the same thing. You get the same results, but they said it cuts down on the trimming using a ruler to square the HSTs.

That's how I make them most of the time.

Don't need to worry about stretching the bias edges because they are sewn before you cut! Thanks for sharing this method with us. I'll be using it in the future, for sure.

I have never seen this method before, thanks for the tute. I am mostly self taught when it comes to quilting. The only formal instruction I have had was a quilting class at JoAnn's in 2004. We made a quilt that I think came out well. Other than that some of my quilting friends have taught me a lot and I have purchased lots of books over the years.

Thanks for the tute, good idea.

WOW I have never seen it done that way and it cures the problem with having bias edges. I will definitely bookmark this. Thanks

i just tried this-- works great. good thing i used scrap fabric since i forgot to add the seam allowance--oops! but it will be wonderful for a scrappy i want to make, and now, hurrah, i have 8hst's made! woohoo!! seriously, with the right numbers this method is painless! how does it affect your yardage? it seems you are taking large squares instead of strips, so do you end up using more actual length of fabric? math was never my strong point, but i was great at recess and lunch. 8-)

Quilt Novice 02-25-2012 08:05 AM

this is great no bias edges thanks!

PinkLotus 02-25-2012 10:19 AM

HST are easy

I have seen this done many times to make multipule HST. Eleanore Burns has a couple technech's that making HST and making flying geese a breeze!

Here is her site for quilt in a day. I am following her "Quilters Almanac Quilt Series" You can watch and learn her easy to do patterns by selecting the Video List and check out the many ways she has made quilting easy. Have fun and enjoy.

I recently showed this in my quilting class and they loved it! Even though many had been quilting for years, some of them had never seen it. Thanks for sharing it for those that have never seen it. I use it often and love it!!

I had seen the method where you end up with 4 HST, but this is super!!! Bookmarked!

nannyrick 02-27-2012 04:57 PM

Thanks for the tute. I appreciate it.

I use this method for all my HSTs.
If you just add 2 in to the squares for each size it is easy to figure. For 2 1/2 in triangles use 6 in squares, for 3 1/2 in use 8 in squares, etc. But since most rulers have an extra 1/2 in added I use them also it just wastes a little more fabric.
I also use Quilt In A Days triangle square up ruler that you only have to use one cut to square up. It is well worth the price.
