Hugs for cancer patients
 

Since there is so much going on with cancer, I myself had a mastectomy 1 year ago and my hubby was diagnosed with terminal cancer just before Christmas last year :(, I thought I repost this, some people, maybe some new quilters on the board, might be interested :)

This is my Hope for Zelda quilt I made beginning of last year.

Instructions how I made it:
OK, here it goes, I will try as promised to give you the details of this quilt I made off a picture. I hope I got it right (maybe you'll make sure to have enough fabric of each to make adjustments if necessary).

For the letter "H" I used 11 x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2 - for "P" I used 9 x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" and 1 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" (for 2 triangles) - for "E" I used 11 x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" and 1 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" (for 1 triangle). For the "Bow" I used 5 x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" and 6 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" (for triangles) and 1 x 16 1/2" x 4 1/2" + 1 x 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" + 1 x 12 1/2" x 4 1/2".

For the star you need 4 x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" in white + 4 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" in white (for triangles) + light color 4 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" (for triangles) + dark color 4 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" (for triangles)

White color: 8 x 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" + 1 x 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" + 1 x 8 1/2" x 12 1/2" + 1 x 23 1/2" x 4 1/2" (you might have to adjust with the large ones, you can check as you go or even if you want to you can change them into all 4 1/2" x 4 1/2") + 3 x 4/2" x 4 1/2" + 7 x 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" (for triangles)

For the patterned squares I used satin reinforced with interfacing for the little inside square and the I made strips of 2 1/4" of the patterned and 1 1/2" of the satin and sewed them together and cut them back into 1 1/2" wide strips to framed on each side with a 2" wide floral - I hope this makes sense!!! I had to check and cut them all back to 4 1/2" squares.

I bordered the lot with a 2 1/2" strip and then a 4 1/2" but that's up to you, how many strips and how wide.

The lady it's for was once member of our church and held Sunday school, then moved away to be near her daughters and now she's battling reoccuring cancer with chemo. Thought this comfort quilt would make her feel our hugs from afar!!! Since she's got ovarian cancer, I chose the color teal for the bow and in Australia we have ovarian cancer awareness this month, so it's just fitting and finished at the right time.

P.S. I have in my "to do" list an idea I might make this same quilt with different colours and in a smaller size to be hung in the chemo unit of our hospital where hubby goes regularly :)

Beautiful quilt and I'm so sorry you had cancer and that your husband is now battling it. So sorry for your friend with ovarian cancer as well. The disease sucks! But your kindness and love will give her strength.

what's the finished size of that? guessing about 52X56 or so? it's interesting your bow color is teal, while here in the states it's pink....s'pose it can be any color....nice uplifting quilt, awful disease.
